I curled up in the childâs bed and wondered why she wasnât here anymore. And when it might be an okay time for me to ask.
And Duke waited for me in my dreams, first in the form of a lycan, bigger than a horse, with piercing green eyes that froze the blood in my veins. And then in the form of a man who smiled at me over a plastic table that wobbled.
I woke up bathed in sweat.
The thought of giving Taig another hug, feeling him soften and warm to it, drove me out into the lounge, but it was Lilith who was waiting with a coffee for me. The relief that swept through me at the sight of her silver hair and strong hands just about floored me.
âHey,â she said, glancing up from the coffee. âHeard youâare you okay?â
âI need a hug,â I admitted pitifully.
She set the coffee down and came forward. I met her halfway and clung to her, shaking. She held me in silence in one of her rare, heart-mending hugs. Elders, I loved this witch. And when I started to ease away, she stepped back, worry in her expression. âTell me whatâs going on.â
It wasnât a question. I shook my head, taking a deep breath. I couldnât deal with her disappointment too. âFucking nightmares. Fucking brains.â
Sympathetically, she passed me a coffee. âIs this about Ryan?â
âFucking bosses,â I said and filled my mouth with coffee to wash away the taste of bile. âFucking wizards,â I added because the anger felt good.
She raised her brows. âCome on, Roars.â
âItâs nothing. Super fucking huge oversights I made, but nothing.â I drank coffee, stole a pancake, and shrugged it away aggressively. âTaigâs at work?â
âYeah.â Sheâd folded her arms. âSince when have you had an issue with fucking around and finding out?â
Since Iâm utterly powerless against it. I felt sick, but I bit into the pancake, trying to shake off the last of the dream. It was pretty good, even cold. Crispy. Less fluffy, but there was more than a hint of vanilla. The manâs pancakes were a religious experience.
She passed me my work phone. âGot this from your desk.â
âOh.â There were only two missed calls with no messages. A million emails. I didnât open any. âYou didnât have to. It wouldâve waited.â
âI was there.â Eclipse jumped up onto the bench and we both paused to admire her as she padded comfortably across the surface and sat in front of me, eyeballing my pancakes. I offered her a little, and she took it delicately. âIâm a custodian now too.â
I tried to suck in air and swallow at the same time. Through the burning pain and reflexive coughing, I said, âThatâs amazing!â
Why was he bringing her on board?
She laughed at me and leaned over to stroke Eclipseâs head, earning purrs and attention. âYeah. Lucky, âcause Ryan absolutely wouldnât have hired me after I told him to shove his staff up his arse when he tried to get you discharged into his care.â
The reminder of what heâd tried to do made my head swim and my stomach rebel.
