Twenty-Seven

I curled up in the child’s bed and wondered why she wasn’t here anymore. And when it might be an okay time for me to ask.

And Duke waited for me in my dreams, first in the form of a lycan, bigger than a horse, with piercing green eyes that froze the blood in my veins. And then in the form of a man who smiled at me over a plastic table that wobbled.

I woke up bathed in sweat.

The thought of giving Taig another hug, feeling him soften and warm to it, drove me out into the lounge, but it was Lilith who was waiting with a coffee for me. The relief that swept through me at the sight of her silver hair and strong hands just about floored me.

“Hey,” she said, glancing up from the coffee. “Heard you—are you okay?”

“I need a hug,” I admitted pitifully.

She set the coffee down and came forward. I met her halfway and clung to her, shaking. She held me in silence in one of her rare, heart-mending hugs. Elders, I loved this witch. And when I started to ease away, she stepped back, worry in her expression. “Tell me what’s going on.”

It wasn’t a question. I shook my head, taking a deep breath. I couldn’t deal with her disappointment too. “Fucking nightmares. Fucking brains.”

Sympathetically, she passed me a coffee. “Is this about Ryan?”

“Fucking bosses,” I said and filled my mouth with coffee to wash away the taste of bile. “Fucking wizards,” I added because the anger felt good.

She raised her brows. “Come on, Roars.”

“It’s nothing. Super fucking huge oversights I made, but nothing.” I drank coffee, stole a pancake, and shrugged it away aggressively. “Taig’s at work?”

“Yeah.” She’d folded her arms. “Since when have you had an issue with fucking around and finding out?”

Since I’m utterly powerless against it. I felt sick, but I bit into the pancake, trying to shake off the last of the dream. It was pretty good, even cold. Crispy. Less fluffy, but there was more than a hint of vanilla. The man’s pancakes were a religious experience.

She passed me my work phone. “Got this from your desk.”

“Oh.” There were only two missed calls with no messages. A million emails. I didn’t open any. “You didn’t have to. It would’ve waited.”

“I was there.” Eclipse jumped up onto the bench and we both paused to admire her as she padded comfortably across the surface and sat in front of me, eyeballing my pancakes. I offered her a little, and she took it delicately. “I’m a custodian now too.”

I tried to suck in air and swallow at the same time. Through the burning pain and reflexive coughing, I said, “That’s amazing!”

Why was he bringing her on board?

She laughed at me and leaned over to stroke Eclipse’s head, earning purrs and attention. “Yeah. Lucky, ‘cause Ryan absolutely wouldn’t have hired me after I told him to shove his staff up his arse when he tried to get you discharged into his care.”

The reminder of what he’d tried to do made my head swim and my stomach rebel.
